چکیده

Methods Prospective 6 months pre-post study of all CVC cannulations, except those peripherally inserted, in patients from onco-haematological ward in a university teaching hospital. Ultrasound team was composed by 3 physicians and 2 nurses trained on vascular USG cannulation. During “pre-team” period, CVC cannulation was performed by the intensivist on duty using anatomical landmark or USG technique. In the second period, CVC cannulation was exclusively performed by USG team. Demographic and clinical data as well as variables related to cannulation were collected. Results are expressed as mean ± standard deviation and percentages. Comparisons between variables were performed by Student ́s t-test and Pearson ́s chisquared test or Fisher’s exact test.

[Ultrasound guidance for placement of central venous catheters].

Central venous cannulation is associated with a number of serious complications like arterial punction and pneumothorax and with discomfort for the awake patient when repeated attempts are made. Ultrasound guidance during cannulation has been shown to reduce complications, increase the success rate and thus reduce the need for multiple catheter placement attempts. We describe two methods using ...

Novel Ultrasound Guidance System for Real-time Central Venous Cannulation: Safety and Efficacy

INTRODUCTION Real-time ultrasound guidance is considered to be the standard of care for central venous access for non-emergent central lines. However, adoption has been slow, in part because of the technical challenges and time required to become proficient. The AxoTrack(®) system (Soma Access Systems, Greenville, SC) is a novel ultrasound guidance system recently cleared for human use by the U...

Ultrasound-guided internal jugular vein catheterization in critically ill pediatric patients

PURPOSE Continuous intravenous access is imperative in emergency situations. Ultrasound-guided internal jugular vein (IJV) catheterization was investigated in critically ill pediatric patients to assess the feasibility of the procedure. METHODS Patients admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit between February 2011 and September 2012 were enrolled in this study. All patients received a c...

An unusual route taken by a central venous catheter resulting in inadvertent subclavian artery cannulation: a case report

Ultrasound-guided cannulation of a central venous catheter into the internal jugular vein (IJV) was performed in the intensive care unit for a critically ill patient. The catheter was inserted into the subclavian artery distally, despite prior ultrasound confirmation of the guidewire position using both the in-plane and out-of-plane views. The catheter was removed successfully by the interventi...
